Ma is the collaborative work of Austin Barker and Dominic Sena. The project is heavily inspired by the vast alien landscape of Big Bend, and influenced by bands like Radiohead, Alex G, and Brian Eno. Ma records and produces their music in their home studio, Daytime Moon, in Austin, TX.
...It sounds almost like Tears for Fears dehydrated themselves of their synth-pop sonics and swapped them out for a stripped-down grunge arrangement. The chord progression evokes wanderlust, the vocal harmonies inspire mesa-height hope, the drum patterns clatter like an abrupt rocky descent, and some of the guitar work sounds straight out of a revisionist Western soundtrack. -Jack Anderson, KUTX
Cavernous drums, raw acoustic guitar riffs, and moody vocals abound on this slow burn of a song, which culminates with a powerful monologue and soulful saxophone solo. The result is a track that feels like it has its feet on the ground and its head in the clouds – or in another dimension entirely.
– Elizabeth Braaten, Austin Chronicle
The vocals maintain a delectably serene composure throughout, with the “won’t be afraid,” sequence enamoring especially as the jangly guitar lushness and heavy distortion combine with satiating cohesion. “RIOT” is a standout showing from this rising duo, marking their third single of 2023. Look for their first live performance in Austin next month. -Mike Mineo, Obscure Sound
